You
have probably heard people refer to cookies as something
used to "track" web users as they visit websites.
Cookies are created by the websites you visit much like your
dry cleaner creates a claim check for you. You leave the dry
cleaner with your claim check and when you return, you pick
up what you dropped off in exchange for your claim check.
Cookies
cannot "follow" you from site to site. They are
not programs. They cannot gather information from your hard
drive about who you are, where you live, how much money you
make or what your credit card numbers are. A cookie
is a simple line of text that the website creates from information
you supply willingly -- it allows the website to recognize
you when you return.
This
is useful to sites that want to give you information that
is relevant to you as quickly as possible.
Cookies
are stored in files your browser keeps and can be deleted
by you at any time. If you don't revisit a site for quite
some time, your browser may do the deleting for you.
The
bottom line is, we may use cookies to understand which offers
or invitations are meaningful to you. If we are interested
in more detailed information about you, we will always ask
you for it in an open way and will only share that information
with your permission.
